A closed lake, water flat and knee-deep for hundreds of metres, and wind that shows up more often than on the coast: Workum is the nursery of Frisian kiting.
Workum isn't the sea. It's the IJsselmeer, the old Zuiderzee sealed off from the North Sea by the Afsluitdijk: a giant, tideless lake with no ocean swell, where the water stays low and glassy. Off It Soal beach you can stand for more than 200 metres — sometimes barely past your knees — on a sandy bottom scattered with shells, until a sandbar marks the step down to deeper water. You fall, you stand up, you walk. Statistically the IJsselmeer delivers more ridable days than much of the coast, and the west-facing It Soal shore catches south-west through north-west winds side-onshore.
The nursery of Frisian kitesurfing earns its name: a lake with no tide or current, knee-deep water for hundreds of metres, an official marked kite zone and a school on the beach. In easterlies (offshore) the water empties — save your session for a westerly day.

Rig on the sand or the adjoining lawn and launch inside the kite zone marked by yellow buoys. Firm sandy bottom, knee-deep a long way out. The southern part of the beach is for swimmers — kite only inside the zone.
The It Soal beach pavilion serves food and drinks facing the water (fries, fish, Frisian coffee); the campsite has a mini-market, and Workum's historic centre — five minutes by car or fifteen by bike — adds restaurants and terraces.
The one sector to avoid is the land wind (E/NE/SE, town side): on this lake it pushes you offshore, out of the zone. Beginners: never in an easterly. The Workumerwaard is a Natura 2000 bird reserve: kite only inside the yellow-buoy zone, at least 60 m from shore, launch in the water, and the zone tightens during the breeding season. Respect the markers, or the spot closes for everyone.
