Discover Rockanje
Rockanje is a versatile North Sea beach on the island of Voorne in South Holland, with dunes lining the sand. The water stays fairly flat thanks to a sandbank lying just offshore. One catch: an easterly blowing off the land is dangerous and has no place here.
Rockanje has real character: a wide sandy beach backed by dunes, right at the tip of the island of Voorne, in South Holland. Out front, an L-shaped sandbank breaks down the chop and keeps the water fairly flat — a real plus for learning. The spot works on sea wind, from northwest through south; an easterly, though, comes off the land, turns the conditions irregular and dangerous, and has no place here. From the southeast-to-south sector, keep an eye on drift out to sea. On the tide, the sources are clear on one point only: at high water there's less room to launch and land — nothing more, so don't bank on a fixed window. The beach runs on a bathing season, with separate swim and watersports zones: you can kite all year, but from May to September the swim zone in front of the beach bars is off-limits — you switch instead to Rockanje Sportstrand, on either side of Badstrand. With a buddy and a solid self-rescue, you've got a versatile spot that's good all year round.
Level and best time
Beginners and seasoned riders both feel at home here: when it's calm, it's a great beach to learn on, and the sandbank offshore keeps the water easy to handle. Spot run and lessons given by NextLevel Beach Events.
source : kitegids.nl ↗The directions that work: northwest, west, southwest and south. An easterly off the land makes for very irregular, dangerous conditions — let it pass. In the southeast-to-south sector, keep an eye on drift out to sea. On the tide, only one thing is certain: at high water there's less room to launch and land; beyond that, no source gives a real window. Paid parking in season (roughly April to October), free in winter.

Once there, follow the Eerste Slag or Tweede Slag signs. From the Eerste Slag beach access it's about 200 m to your left to reach the watersports area; from Tweede Slag, about 200 m to your right to the kite area. Parking sits right at the foot of the beach — paid April to October, free from 1 November to 31 March.

When the easterly blows off the land, the conditions turn very irregular and dangerous — 'Avoid kiting in offshore east wind.' In the southeast-to-south sector there's the added risk of drifting toward the Slufter and the North Sea. The directions that do work, by contrast, are NW, W, SW and S — sea wind, in other words.

From May to September, kiting is banned in the swim zone in front of the beach bars; during that window you ride only at Rockanje Sportstrand, on either side of Badstrand. And in any case, never kite inside the marked swim zone (between markers 12,000 and 13,300, yellow buoys). The sandbank, about 1.5 km out, is off-limits too.

Always head out with a buddy who can help or raise the alarm, and keep your self-rescue sharp. In an emergency: Rockanje lifeguard brigade or 112.
