Discover Oesterdam — Tholen
The Oesterdam closes off the tidal Oosterschelde: shallow, glassy water between the yellow buoys — a great place to learn, to freestyle, to foil. But the tide calls the shots here, and at high water nobody should be out.
The Oesterdam is anything but a wild spot — it's a spot that lives by the tide. It links Tholen to Zuid-Beveland along the Oosterschelde, where the water rises and falls twice a day. Between the yellow buoys the water is shallow and mirror-flat — a dream surface for learning, landing your first freestyle tricks or foiling in peace, sheltered and easy to read. But it all hinges on one thing: you need enough water and a patch of accessible sand to launch safely. At high water the sea pins against the concrete dam — no run-out left, and that's exactly where it gets dangerous. The OBC puts it plainly, and local police warn that a single accident could be enough to shut the spot down. Wear booties for the oysters, stay inside the buoys, and always keep your kite pointed out over the water. Learn to read the tide and you've got one of the most forgiving learning spots in Zeeland. Ignore it and you're asking for trouble. It's also a firm favourite with German riders looking for somewhere calmer than the Brouwersdam.
Level and best time
Shallow, glassy water between the buoys: perfect for learning, freestyle and foil, and far quieter than the packed sea dams. It's no easygoing spot, though — you need the right tide AND the right wind direction, and the local club (OBC) is upfront about warning less experienced kiters. Show up with a plan, don't wing it.

It all comes down to the tide: you ride the window around low water, when you've got both enough water and a patch of accessible sand to launch and land safely. The exact window depends on the path and the tide — ask the local club. (High water = danger, see safety.)

Safety
NEVER ride at high water: the water pins you against the concrete dam with no run-out at all. The OBC treats this as a non-negotiable rule; local police warn that a single accident could be enough to close the spot for good.
source : oesterdam.be ↗Launch and land on the sand with your kite pointed out over the water; otherwise it drags you toward the concrete dam and the road. Weigh down a grounded kite so it can't blow away.
source : kitesurfvereniging.nl ↗The danger is high water: that's when the water pins against the concrete dam with no run-out left. You ride around low water, when you've got both enough water and a patch of accessible sand to launch and land safely. The exact window depends on the path and the tide — have the local club confirm it, and stop the moment you no longer have a safe launch or run-out.
