Discover Leucate La Franqui

La Franqui is the wide-open Coussoules beach facing the Med — endless sand, the howling Tramontane, and every Easter the Mondial du Vent turns it into a world-champions' arena.

La Franqui doesn't give itself up on the first session. You come in on a little dirt road, walk with your arms full of gear, splash across a puddle — and the Coussoules beach opens up, vast, its back to the village and its face to the open sea. It's a big-air spot. When the Tramontane settles in, it blows harder here than anywhere else around the lagoon: the water goes flat, the runs stretch out, and the wind drowns out everything else. This is a place for self-reliant riders — the Tramontane is an offshore land wind, it pushes you out to sea and forgives no hesitation. When it eases off, the Marin rolls in from the sea, builds steady waves, and La Franqui becomes a wave-riding playground. That split personality — glassy under Tramontane, waves under Marin — is what built its reputation. And every Easter the Mondial du Vent sets up its rigs here: the best in the world come to chase speed records.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

A spot for riders who are self-reliant on open water. The Tramontane comes in side-off to offshore and pushes you out to sea, so riding upwind has to be second nature. Not comfortable with that yet? Stay on the shallow Grazel lagoon, right behind the beach.

Best time

Wind about 300 days a year. Under Tramontane (NW), you get flat water and the strongest wind in the whole Leucate area. When it eases off, the Marin (SE) builds clean waves that are perfect for wave-riding. The big date on the calendar: the Mondial du Vent, at Easter.

Before you go

Safety

Offshore wind (Tramontane)

The Tramontane (NW) is a cold, gusty offshore land wind that pushes riders out to sea: solid upwind skills are a must. For anyone who isn't self-reliant, the danger is real.

source : zoomkite.com
Summer restriction

From 15 June to 15 September, kiting is only allowed in front of the KSL clubhouse and in the Grazel. Outside those zones and dates, ask around locally.

Other hazards

Rocks, specific currents, rip channels: nothing reliably documented. To confirm with the local club (KSL) — unverified.
