The Étang de La Palme is the lagoon where you can stand almost everywhere: half a metre of clear water over sand, flamingos and salt pans for a backdrop, in the heart of the Narbonnaise regional nature park. The Languedoc’s reference to learn with a clear head in the tramontana, and to chase dead-flat freestyle on a south-east marin — the water turns into a real billiard table.
La Palme is a wild lagoon at the foot of the Corbières, where the sand under your feet is never far: about half a metre of water, almost everywhere. That comfort is what makes it the Languedoc’s teaching spot — little chop even when it blows, and a true billiard table on a south-east marin. The place runs to two tempos: a muscular, gusty north-west tramontana, a calmer, dead-flat south-east marin. But it’s a lagoon you earn. A Natura 2000 site, its zoning is maintained by the town: you respect the marking and the seagrass beds where birds nest. And its water level depends on the year — the La Franqui grau silts up in summer, opens in autumn, and a scorching summer (2006) nearly emptied the lagoon, so much so that the club keeps a page tracking it. A lagoon to read before you ride it.
From beginner to advanced. This is the Aude’s teaching spot par excellence, « an ideal place to learn safely »: you can stand almost everywhere in a very shallow lagoon. Advanced riders come for flat freestyle on a south-east marin and for the strong tramontana. The launch area is long (200 to 350 m depending on the source) but narrow — under 13 m wide in places: stay alert when launching and landing.
source : spots.universkite.fr ↗The prevailing wind is the north-west tramontana, a powerful wind that often blows very hard, with gusts over 30 knots; it’s turbulent mainly in its first days, before it settles, and during the day it tends to back slightly north or north-east while turning very gusty. The south-east marin, steadier, turns the water into a « billiard table » — the prime freestyle session. Schools run from April to November.
source : zoomkite.com ↗Off-season, you reach the bank via the D709 from Port-la-Nouvelle, first track on the left after the camper-van area, and park along the bank — no further than the beach, as that zone is used for turning round. In summer, car access is banned: you park in the village of Salin de la Palme and take a free shuttle run by the town. Exact dates vary between sources — check the season’s municipal bylaw.

The spot is very busy with schools from April to November — Ebkite, Windykite, Surf and Kite, Kite Odyssey among them — with many beginners. Keep your distance from students, watch for crashes and tangles. The local club, the Funboard La Palme association, runs a lagoon watch (navigation zone, good conduct, water levels).

The town puts it in black and white: « Always stay alert, as the north-west wind, the tramontana, very gusty, pushes you out toward the open water. » On this closed lagoon, it carries you away from the launch bank toward the far shore. When it’s onshore on your zone, the town advises moving a little off the beach before your waterstart. A powerful wind, gusts over 30 knots, sometimes violent shifts: keep a margin and don’t drift far from the bank.

Riding over the salt pans bordering the lagoon is not allowed (active pans to the south). Kite launching is banned at the Vignes spot, to the south-west past the campsite, because of the danger tied to its layout: that area is for windsurfing only. During nesting season, avoid approaching the seagrass beds where birds nest. The town also mentions a mandatory helmet, whose scope should be checked with the town hall.
