Discover Lefkada — Agios Ioannis
Beneath a row of old windmills, a short hop from Lefkada town, an NW thermal builds every summer afternoon with clockwork regularity. It's one of the most reliable winds anywhere in the Mediterranean.
Mornings, the bay is glassy as a mirror. Then, around 2 pm, the maestro settles in and the water fills with sails until sunset. The turquoise water stays rather flat, the wind comes head-to-cross-on, and the whole mood breathes green, relaxed Ionian island. The old windmills watch over the kite zone, set apart from the windsurfers. The thermal blows steady, around 15 to 20 knots: muscular without being brutal, just enough to link up runs and progress without getting knocked about. It's a spot you come back to for that calm regularity, session after session, in soft end-of-day light.
Level and best time
An intermediate spot at heart, clearly more approachable than the strong-meltemi corners of the Aegean. The NW thermal blows around 15–20 knots, onshore to side-onshore — a safe direction — over turquoise, fairly flat water. The slippery rock-slab bottom does make it ill-suited to true beginners, whom the schools start by boat or on flatter nearby bays instead.

Agios Ioannis / Milos Beach ("Ai Giannis"), about 2 km north of Lefkada town, on the Ionian Sea. The windmills are the landmark. Note: this is the NORTH Agios Ioannis — not the west-coast cliff spot that shares the same name.

At the water's edge, the bottom alternates between sand and rounded-stone slabs, smooth and very slippery: walk carefully on launch and landing, especially on onshore-wind days when the swell pushes you onto those plates. And since this is a busy Blue Flag beach, stay strictly inside the kite zone, to the right of the windmills, well clear of swimmers.
