The spot

Discover Wimereux — Côte d'Opale

Wimereux, the Côte d'Opale's emblematic city spot: south-westerly waves in front of a Belle Époque promenade, five kilometres north of Boulogne. A spot ridden 'on a window' — the range is such (nearly 8 metres) that the beach literally disappears at high tide, the sea breaking against the dyke.

Wimereux is the Côte d'Opale's city spot par excellence: a Belle Époque promenade dyke, shops in town, and south-westerly waves that make it a favourite of riders from the North of France, Belgium and Germany. But it's a constrained spot, wholly tide-dependent. The reference port is Boulogne, one of the coast's biggest ranges: a mean amplitude of about 8 metres, up to nearly 8.80 m at springs. The radical upshot: the spot is ridden only from low to mid tide, roughly three hours around low water. At high tide the beach all but disappears and the waves break onto the dyke, creating a very dangerous shorebreak, especially on a west-to-south-west wind. At low tide a rock ledge uncovers offshore: the Tourne bank, which bears the ruins of the Fort de Croÿ, an 18th-century tower of which only foundations remain, merging with the rocks; rocky areas also close off both ends of the beach (Fort de la Crèche to the south). The tidal current is significant — always watch your drift. For wind, the hazard is the north-east to south-east offshore, forbidden. In summer, the guides report a restriction (no kiting before 7 pm in July–August) and a supervised bathing zone — to be taken as conditional, since the municipal bylaw couldn't be found. A magnificent spot you have to earn, eyes on the tide and on your drift.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

Intermediate to expert: the short tide window, the shorebreak on the dyke, the currents and the rock ledge make it a spot you read before you ride. The warning holds for everyone: on a big coefficient at high tide, the inexperienced are better off staying out of the water. To start out, go through the schools, which often pick a site other than the dyke depending on tide and wind.

Best time

The prevailing wind is south-west. South and south-west give the biggest waves, side-off to side-onshore — Wimereux's signature conditions; north-west is flatter and more controlled, good freeride; north, side-onshore, raises smaller waves. The spot is well exposed to swell: on a westerly, the waves can get very big. Known as a windy spot. Rideable year-round, cold water in winter.

Access & schools

A16 exit 32 (Wimereux south), follow 'Centre Régional de Voile / Digue de mer', park facing the sea or near the Club Nautique (free and paid). On schools: Wimkite School (based at the Club Nautique de Wimereux, since 2005, state-qualified instructors — but teaches mostly at Wissant, Wimereux being a fallback site depending on tide and wind) and Kite Camp 62. Note: the 'Side Shore Wimereux' sometimes cited doesn't exist — the real contacts are these two schools.

Before you go

Safety

Tide: the riding window

Checking the tide is essential: ride only from low to mid tide (about ±3 h around low water). At low tide a wide sand beach opens for good sessions; at high tide the sea covers the beach and creates a dangerous shorebreak on the dyke, especially on a west-to-south-west wind. On a big coefficient at high tide, the inexperienced should stay out of the water.

Rock ledge & current

At low tide a rock ledge uncovers offshore (Tourne bank, Fort de Croÿ ruins); rocky areas close off both ends of the beach (Fort de la Crèche to the south, a rocky area to the north). The tidal current is significant — always watch your drift. The concrete dyke is itself a hard hazard as the sea rises.

Offshore & summer restriction

The wind hazard is offshore: the north-east to south-east sector is forbidden. In summer, the spot guides report a restriction (no kiting before 7 pm in July–August) and point to an alternative spot to the north, outside the supervised beach — to be taken as conditional, since the municipal bylaw couldn't be found. Bathing is supervised in summer: respect the swimmers' zone.
