Tarifa's learn-to-kite beach, Europe's kite capital: a huge arc of sand at the edge of town where you learn in west wind, while the Levante keeps the flat water for experts.
Los Lances is the longest beach in Tarifa, from the Rio Jara campsite to Los Pinos, walkable from town: a vast arc of sand that works at every level and remains Europe's most famous learning ground. Two winds share the year. The Poniente (west) is steady and rather light (10-25 knots), blowing onshore off the Atlantic: it's the beginners' wind, and in summer the sea is often calm. The Levante (east) is the opposite: gusty, cross-off, up to 40 knots, for experienced riders only. So you learn in the Poniente, on a beach where bather and kiter zones are marked off in season.

Level and best time
Beginner-friendly in Poniente (westerly, onshore): this is Tarifa's teaching beach, staffed by dozens of schools. In Levante (easterly) the strong, gusty wind changes everything — the spot belongs to experienced riders and schools relocate their lessons. Open sea, so expect some chop even on good days.

Getting there & parking
Los Lances stretches north of Tarifa town along the N-340. Beachside parking at the northern accesses (Río Jara) and at the town entrance; in summer arrive in the morning — everything fills by noon.
Launch area
A huge sandy beach with easy rigging everywhere. School/free-rider zones move with the season — respect the marked corridors and leave the Río Jara lagoon to supervised beginners.
Food & drink
Beach bars along the sand (Tangana, Waves…) for eating and drinking with your feet in the sand, plus the whole of Tarifa five minutes away: tapas, cafés and supermarkets to fill the coolbox before your session.

The Levante & the crowd
The Levante (east) can blow up to 40 knots, gusty and cross-off (pushing slightly out to sea): not for beginners. Los Lances is also one of Europe's busiest spots — respect the marked zones and right-of-way. The small flat-water lagoon only forms in the right Levante and fits only a few kiters.
