Discover Rhodes — Prasonisi
A tongue of sand at the southern tip of Rhodes, a different sea on each side, and the Meltemi funnelling through: flat lagoon on the left to learn, waves on the right to let loose. One spot, two completely different sessions.
This is a place like nowhere else. You arrive on a road that frays out to the very tip, and suddenly there's nothing: just this arrow of sand thrown between two seas, an island-hill at the end, and blue filling everything. The Meltemi is already there, taut, hissing over the dune. On one side the lagoon is smooth as a table, on the other the swell pounds the bar — you can swap worlds by crossing thirty metres of sand. That's what makes the spot a Dodecanese legend: you don't have to choose between speed and waves, they're back to back. The flip side is the summer crowd and the spartan life at the end of the world. But when you get planing across the flat with Prasonisi island carved out against the wind, you understand why riders come back every year.
Level and best time
Both levels, but not on the same side. The flat west lagoon (the sheltered side, side-offshore wind) is the schools' and beginners' playground: shallow, smooth water with instruction on hand. The east side takes the Meltemi cross-onshore and throws up waist- to mast-high waves — that's where confident riders who can punch out belong. In peak season the rideable zone is narrow and packed: even the flat side isn't a self-service spot for a raw beginner riding alone.

The headland's Venturi effect accelerates the wind: Prasonisi is almost always stronger than the rest of the island, with 20-30 knots common in high summer. Legendary reliability — one of Europe's surest bets for wind.

Prasonisi is the very southern tip of Rhodes, ~90 km from Rhodes Town along the west coast — reckon a little over an hour's drive, the last stretch on a small road. A large dirt car park serves the base of the tombolo, the sand spit linking Prasonisi island to the rest of Rhodes. From there you walk to one side of the isthmus or the other depending on what you're after: west for the flat lagoon, east for the waves. This is the end of the road, with no big town nearby: Kattavia is the closest village, and most riders stay there or in Lachania. Rig up, pick your water, and bear in mind that space — on the ground and on the water — shrinks fast once everyone arrives around midday.

On the kite side you'll find Kite Prasonisi (kite, wing, surf), the Meltemi Kite Club and Prasonisi Beach (Kite & Surf Rhodes); several long-standing windsurf centres (ProCenter Prasonisi, Toyota Prasonisi Center) share the beach. Several kite stations cover repairs and emergency rescue. Tavernas and cafés on site for a break, but for groceries and lodging you head back up to Kattavia or Lachania.

The real trap here is the sand spit itself: it's a low tombolo that narrows and can be washed over when the sea rises or in heavy weather — Prasonisi island then becomes a true island again. Don't get caught on foot on it, and never leave your gear on the part that floods. Second hazard: the crowd. The rideable zone is narrow and packed in summer, with schools full of beginners on the flat side — collisions and crossed lines are the number-one risk. On the east side, the Meltemi accelerated by the Venturi effect overpowers fast: a forecast 7-8 knots can be a real 14-15, so rig a size down from your guess. Bear in mind too that there isn't always a rescue boat on the flat side, and watch for shallows and rocky patches near the shore.
