A flat, shallow lagoon on the Silver Coast, 90 minutes north of Lisbon: you can stand, the Nortada blows almost daily in summer, and the shelter from swell makes it one of Portugal's best beginner spots.
On the Bom Sucesso / inner side, the Lagoa de Óbidos is waist-deep, table-flat and sheltered from the swell: no waves, no shorebreak, and you can stand across most of the zone. The wind is the Nortada — the N/NW airstream of Portugal's west coast — blowing a steady 15–25 knots most days from May to September, parallel to the shore and without shifting. Facing the lagoon, the Foz do Arelho hill creates a venturi that speeds it up: a touch stronger, a touch gustier. On this bank the Nortada blows into the lagoon rather than out to sea — a genuine safety net for a beginner.
An excellent beginner ground in summer: the inner zone on the Bom Sucesso side stays legal year-round, the water is shallow and the Nortada blows almost daily. Know this: strict kite zoning from 15 June to 15 September and currents at the inlet — follow the school's plan, not your instinct.

Launch from the sand of the inner shore into shallow, flat water. In summer, kiting is banned left of the red line (Foz do Arelho holiday camp → Bom Sucesso restaurant): the inner zone remains the legal ground. Shells and weed on the bottom — booties recommended.
A beach restaurant at Bom Sucesso and cafés in Vau to eat and drink steps from the spot; Foz do Arelho across the water lines up lagoon-side terraces, and Caldas da Rainha (15 minutes) provides supermarkets and town life.
From 15 June to 15 September, kiting is banned on Bom Sucesso beach, in the estuary mouth and the northern lagoon (bathers); the inner lagoon stays open year-round. Beginners should avoid the ocean/estuary side in any season: windier and exposed, with strong currents at the estuary outflow. At low tide the lagoon drains (sandbars): always check the tide and keep clear of the mouth on the outgoing tide.
