Discover Lacanau — Plage Nord
Lacanau Plage Nord is the ocean at the foot of the Gironde resort — not to be confused with the lake, where you learn. This is a wave spot for seasoned riders: a stiff shorebreak, often strong current, and the hazard that defines the Aquitaine coast, the baïnes (rip currents). Kiters gather to the north, by the Maison de la Glisse.
Lacanau Plage Nord is the urban ocean beach at the foot of the resort, in a strong surf-culture vibe — Lacanau hosts a major surf event. Kiting is the secondary activity here, and a genuine wave spot: Atlantic swell, shorebreak, and an often strong current. Riders gather to the north of the resort, by the Maison de la Glisse, where the beach is wide enough to rig easily. The hazard that overrides all is the baïnes: the town bylaw itself bases its rules on violent currents, shore waves and unpredictable surges, and the Gironde prefecture issues département-wide baïne alerts. The rescue service describes the mechanism: a strong outflow current that even a very good swimmer can't resist — the rule is don't fight it, swim parallel to the beach. Add the cohabitation with surfers, who are many: don't cross the surf lessons, and keep a margin because they don't always see you. The summer rules are strict: the letter of the bylaw bans kiting on regulated beaches during patrols, the only official ocean kite zone being Super-South. Off-season the beach opens up and the spot comes into its own, above all on a north-west thermal. South of the spot, rock armour and breakwaters protect the seafront: don't venture there at high tide. Beginners: head to the lake.
Level and best time
Confident to expert on the ocean. The local club says it plainly: riding is for experts only, because the waves can be big, with stiff shorebreaks and an often strong current. To learn or progress, the schools work on Lake Lacanau (flat, shallow, you can stand) — none give regular lessons on Plage Nord.

The beach faces due west, so west is onshore and the east sector is offshore. Good tide window: a few hours either side of high water; at low tide the baïnes carve out flat-water patches — but full of current.

Easy access from central Lacanau-Océan; paid parking April to October. The beach gets very busy. Kite rules: the 2025 town bylaw sets up regulated zones (Central, North, South, Super-South) closed to kiting during lifeguard hours, and a single official ocean kite zone, at Super-South. In short: in patrolled season you ride at Super-South or after the posts close; off-season the whole beach is free. Locals talk of riding 'past the bee sign'.

The Gironde coast's major hazard. The town bylaw bans bathing outside supervised zones because of baïne outflow currents and unpredictable depth changes. The rescue service: a strong rip forms that even a very good swimmer can't resist; never swim against it, swim parallel to the beach, let yourself drift without panicking, and flag yourself to surfers and windsurfers. The prefecture issues baïne alerts: on high-risk days, you stay out.

Trap south of the spot: the town has protected the seafront with rock armour and breakwaters — don't venture there at high tide. The current can be strong on a due-north wind: don't go too far out, getting back in becomes hard if something goes wrong.
