Capbreton, the 'urban' spot of the south Landes: beaches backing onto the town, the casino and the only harbour on the Landes coast. The gouf — the great undersea canyon — calms the swell in front of the town, the groynes chop up the sea: it's more chop and small waves than a big beach break. Afternoon thermal in summer, punchy lows in autumn.
Capbreton is the urban spot of the south Landes: beaches backing onto the town, the casino, the iconic 1858 pier, and the only harbour on the whole Landes coast. Two things calm the sea in front of the town. First the gouf de Capbreton, that undersea canyon starting 300 m from shore and dropping to 100 m at 1,500 m out: it brakes the swell in front of Capbreton — note it's the opposite at Hossegor, where the gouf amplifies the famous 'la Nord' wave. Then the dykes and rock groynes protecting the first beaches south of the harbour. Hence water that's more chop and small waves than big beach break. The kite sector is south of the harbour, towards the Estacade. The hazards are precise. The harbour and its channel: entry is strictly forbidden, the Boudigau estuary flows out there and it's the only harbour between Bayonne and Arcachon, so real traffic. The dykes, groynes and blockhouses: hard obstacles in the water and on the beach. The baïnes, as everywhere in the Landes, with their rip current at mid-tide. And the Atlantic shorebreak, which can build suddenly — you don't ride alone. The season runs June to October: west-to-north-west thermal in summer, big west-to-south-west lows in September-October for the seasoned. A resort and surf-culture vibe, not the wild side of the dune beaches.
Level and best time
Intermediate to expert. The guides have it for experienced riders only: Atlantic waves, shorebreak, baïne currents and the harbour right next door make it a spot that needs reading. The sea is calmer here than elsewhere on the coast (gouf + groynes), but that doesn't make it a place to learn alone: the local school teaches offshore, in shallow water, late afternoon with the thermal.
source : letskite.ch ↗In summer (June-August) the west-to-north-west thermal (10-20 knots) rises in the early afternoon, with the tide, into the evening. September-October is the season of lows, with west-to-south-west wind up to 35-40 knots. Best directions are south-west and north-west. The southerly, for its part, is gusty and unreliable. A tidal spot: check the tables before each session.

Capbreton strings seven beaches over 5.5 km. The kite/wing sector is south of the harbour, towards the Estacade (which the local club calls 'Miramar beach'). The first beaches below the harbour mole are sheltered by breakwaters, hence a smaller sea. Access via the southern seafront, then ~200 m on foot to the beach. No marked kite zone or kite-specific bylaw for Capbreton in the sources: kiting is documented by the guides, the local club mainly describing surf and regular wingfoil.

Entry to the harbour is strictly forbidden. The Boucarot channel links the Hossegor canal to the ocean, the Boudigau estuary flows out there, and Capbreton is the only harbour between Bayonne and Arcachon: traffic is real. You keep clear of the channel and its approach, and keep a comfortable margin on the south side of the harbour, where kiting happens.
source : letskite.ch ↗Dykes, rock groynes and blockhouses line the beaches (hard obstacles in the water and on the sand, notably at Santocha). The Landes baïnes activate at mid-tide, with a rip current strongest on the rising and falling tide: don't fight it, swim parallel to the beach. The Atlantic waves and shorebreak can build suddenly (0.5 to 2.5 m and more) — don't ride alone, and strictly respect the zones reserved for surfers and bathers.
