The spot

Discover Thaïlande — Pranburi

Some twenty kilometres south of Hua Hin, Pranburi is its calm, natural version: a large flat beach lined with mangroves, a touch more wind, far fewer people. It's the gulf's quiet school spot — the riders' Hua Hin, without the crowd.

Pranburi is Hua Hin's counterpoint: where the resort bustles, the south rolls out a long, bare beach, mangroves, hills in the background and table-flat water. The schools planted their camps here because everything is simpler — more room, more wind, fewer swimmers, and that flat water that forgives falls. You come to Pranburi for quiet progression, the slow rhythm of repeated tacks, and the rare feeling of having the gulf almost to yourself.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

One of the best spots to learn in Asia: flat, shallow water (river mouth and lagoons), a working wind that brings you back, and few people on the water. Kiteboarding Asia (KBA) runs a well-known camp here. A touch windier and steadier than Hua Hin, the wind holds later into the afternoon. All levels, but above all the ideal learning ground.

Best time

Like the whole gulf: the main season is winter (December to March), north-east monsoon side-onshore, 15-25 knots, reliable and safe. A southerly thermal breeze takes over in the afternoon in spring (March-May), gentler. In summer (south-west monsoon) the wind turns west, offshore and rainy: off-season. Pranburi often gains one to three knots on Hua Hin and the wind lasts longer.

Arrival guide

Access & water

Pranburi is just south of Hua Hin, about three hours from Bangkok. The beach is long (several kilometres), with a river mouth and lagoons that flatten the water, and Pran Buri National Park (mangroves) close by. The water is flat and shallow; the tide exposes sandbanks at low water.

Before you go

Safety

Sandbanks & offshore summer season

The working wind (north-east monsoon, southerly thermal) is safe and brings you back. The spot-specific watch-point is the shallow sandbanks and bars that surface in places: scout them so you don't run aground or damage your fin. Avoid the summer south-west monsoon, which is offshore. Wildlife-wise, as everywhere in the gulf, box jellyfish can appear mostly in the rainy season (off kite season): a rashguard and a little care usually suffice.
