Discover Sardaigne — Porto Pollo
Northern Sardinia's flagship kite spot, facing the La Maddalena archipelago. Porto Pollo is a bay split in two by a sand isthmus: on one side flat, shallow water for learning, on the other an exposed bay for the confident — and in the middle, the Mistral funnelling through, accelerated by the Strait of Bonifacio.
Porto Pollo has all of a postcard spot that also runs at full tilt. Caribbean-worthy turquoise water, pink granite islets as a backdrop, and that Mistral dropping down from Corsica, accelerating through the gap — reliable, sometimes punchy. The isthmus is the place's genius: whatever the wind, there's always a flat, kindly side to learn on, and a side that delivers for those who want to play. It's that double face, in a national-park setting, that has made it one of the Mediterranean's major kite gatherings for twenty years.
Level and best time
All levels, thanks to the two bays: on the west side the water is flat and shallow, ideal for lessons and progression; on the exposed side it's choppier and windier, for confident riders wanting power. The isthmus means there's almost always a sheltered side and a punchy side depending on the wind. It's one of Italy's major school hubs (ProKite Sardegna / Alby Rondina, MB Pro Center and others).

The king wind is the Mistral (Maestrale, north-west), accelerated by the funnel effect between Sardinia and Corsica (Strait of Bonifacio): it arrives side-onshore on the bay and brings you back to the coast — working and safe. The thermal tops it up in summer. Often strong (Porto Pollo is known for wind), so plan to size down on big Mistral days.

Porto Pollo (Porto Puddu) is near Palau, about an hour from Olbia airport. A sand isthmus links the coast to Isola dei Gabbiani and separates two bodies of water: the west bay (flat, schools, beginners) and the east bay (exposed, chop/waves). You're within the La Maddalena national park — respect boats, moorings and seagrass.

The working wind (north-west Mistral) is safe — it's side-onshore and brings you back. The real watch-points are elsewhere. First the crowd: it's a tight, very busy body of water (schools, students, windsurfers, the island shuttle) — keep your spacing, especially on the packed flat-bay side. Then the strength: the Mistral can build fast through the funnel, plan to size down. Finally, you're in the La Maddalena national park: respect boats, mooring zones and seagrass beds, and check the zones and rules in force.
