Discover République Dominicaine — Encuentro
Encuentro is the wave beach of the north coast, a few kilometres west of Cabarete. A surf spot first and foremost, it's where experienced kiters come to ride the swell when the wind fills in through the afternoon.
Encuentro has something rawer than Cabarete. Away from the bustle of the bay, it's a reef beach that has stayed natural, sheltered under the trees, where the sand quickly gives way to rock and coral. Here a real wave peels, and a mixed crowd of surfers and kiters shares the water as the day turns. This isn't a place to learn: it's where the experienced come looking for swell, reading the peak, picking their line. The trade wind still blows, faithful as ever — but the sea here has teeth: reef, current, waves with push. You come for that character, not in spite of it.
Level and best time
Let's be plain about it: Encuentro is a reef wave beach, mainly known for surfing. For kite it's wave-riding for experienced riders only — reef, current and water shared with surfers. The wind is side-onshore and carries, but the consequences of a mistake here are very real. Beginners and intermediates stay at Cabarete's Kite Beach.

Encuentro (Playa Encuentro) sits a few kilometres west of Cabarete on the north coast. You reach it from Cabarete along the main road, and Puerto Plata airport is about 25 minutes away. The beach stays largely undeveloped, tucked under the trees at the top of the sand.

source : experience.transat.com ↗Encuentro is the advanced, wave-riding complement to Cabarete's Kite Beach: you come here to ride the swell, not to learn. Respect the surf line-up and the zones — surfers have priority, and everyone stays within the area that matches their level and the swell of the day.

The real danger here is the reef and the line-up shared with surfers. You ride the wave over a coral bottom, with current and sharp rocks in places — for experienced riders only. Always give surfers priority, keep your distance, and never go out beyond your level or beyond what the day's swell lets you safely handle.
