Discover Philippines — Boracay (Bulabog Beach)
The Philippines' flagship kite spot, and one of South-East Asia's references. A flat turquoise lagoon locked in by a barrier reef, where the Amihan blows side-onshore all winter. Ten minutes' walk from White Beach and its party, Bulabog is Boracay's other face: an intense, concentrated kite scene.
Bulabog is South-East Asia's kite factory, in the best sense: pool-flat water where you learn in safety and the regulars stack freestyle, metronomed by a monsoon trade that doesn't let up all winter. The tide sets the tempo — at low water the reef surfaces across the whole lagoon and everyone leaves the water; a few hours later it's a perfect sheet again. And there's that unique split: ten minutes' walk away, White Beach rolls out its sunset cocktails while Bulabog, back turned, watches only the wind.
Level and best time
For all levels, and one of Asia's best learning spots: flat lagoon, shallow hip-deep water, a working wind that brings you back to the beach. The downside is the crowd — in high season, over a hundred kites share a narrow lagoon, and that means managing traffic. Many well-known schools on the lagoon (Freestyle Academy, Isla Kitesurfing, Hangin, Habagat).

The wind comes from north to north-east and arrives side-onshore on Bulabog: it brings you back to shore. In summer (Habagat, June-September), the wind swings west and you then kite on the other side of the island, on White Beach. And above all: the tide rules your windows (see safety).

You reach Boracay via Caticlan airport, then a short bangka (local boat) hop. The island has two faces: White Beach to the west, the touristy postcard and nightlife; Bulabog to the east, the 'wind spot', ten minutes' walk away. The Bulabog lagoon (~1.5 km bay, reef 400 m out) is reserved for kiting and windsurfing.

The number-one danger here is the reef. At low tide it surfaces across the whole lagoon: the water gets too shallow to kite and you don't ride within the hour and a half around low water. The bottom mixes coral, rock and urchins — booties essential. Plan your sessions around high tide. Danger number two is the crowd: in high season, over a hundred kites and bangkas share a narrow lagoon, keep your spacing and watch the lines.
