The spot

Discover Mexique — Los Barriles (Baja California)

The cradle of Sea of Cortez windsurfing, and a great kite spot that's stayed off the crowd's radar. At Los Barriles, El Norte sweeps down from the north for hundreds of kilometres, arriving strong and steady side-shore, unrolling along a ten-mile beach — chop, a little swell, and room for everyone.

There's memory in this wind. This is where Sea of Cortez winter windsurfing was born in the 80s, when the first centres planted their sails on Playa Norte, and El Norte hasn't changed: still dropping from the north, strong and faithful, after hundreds of kilometres of fetch. The beach runs ten miles — wide enough for kiters, windsurfers and SUP to cross paths without crowding. The water chops and kicks up a little swell in the afternoon, just enough to play without turning into a challenge. It's a spot of easygoing regulars more than a scene, the East Cape without the glitter.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

More of a free-ride playground for intermediates: the wind builds in the afternoon and the water kicks up chop and a little swell, which calls for confidence. Beginners can learn here with a school (shallow water near shore, sandy bottom), but flatter La Ventana stays better suited to first lessons. The historic Vela Baja centre and several IKO-certified schools teach and rent on site.

Best time

The northerly El Norte is the spot's engine: drawn down hundreds of kilometres along the Sea of Cortez, it arrives very steady, 18-23 knots on a standard day, 30+ on the big fronts. It builds mid-morning and strengthens through the afternoon. Season November to April, peak November to February (windy ~80% of the time). It's a side-shore from the left (port tack) that turns side-onshore when it backs toward the east.

Arrival guide

Access & beach

Los Barriles sits on the East Cape, 45 min-1 h from Los Cabos airport (SJD). The go-to beach for kite and windsurf is Playa Norte (north side of the village), known for its safe launch zones and steady wind; the town is well-equipped (shops, restaurants, gas station), livelier than La Ventana.

Before you go

Safety

Wind builds in the afternoon & fishing boats

The trap isn't the open sea (the working wind is side to side-onshore and brings you back) but the power build: El Norte strengthens markedly in the afternoon, and the chop with it — turning a mellow session into a muscular one. Pick your kite size with late afternoon in mind. Also: this is a major fishing area, watch for fleets and boats; don't jump near the shore, people or craft, and don't fly your kite on the beach.
