Discover Maurice — Anse La Raie
A turquoise lagoon on Mauritius' north coast, flat and reef-protected, far calmer than Le Morne. The southeast trade fills in through the afternoon and you rack up hours on glassy water, looking out to the offshore islets.
Anse La Raie is the peaceful side of Mauritian kiting. The lagoon spreads out in wide turquoise sheets to the reef, with the offshore shape of Coin de Mire sitting on the horizon. You're far from the dramatic setting and the crowds of Le Morne: the mood here is more family, slower, almost village-like. The winter trade fills in steadily, the water stays flat and protected, and you quickly feel the pressure drop away. It's a place to link runs without rushing, glance up between laps toward the northern islets, and rack up hours on forgiving, glassy water. The kind of spot you come back to because it simply feels good.
Level and best time
A standout beginner and freeride spot: a big flat lagoon closed off by the reef around 2.5 km out, side-onshore trade wind and a shallow bottom where you can often stand at low tide. Gentler and far less crowded than Le Morne, it's the north-island place to learn and clock laps without pressure.

Anse La Raie sits on Mauritius' north coast, between Grand Gaube and Cap Malheureux, away from the bustle of Grand Baie. It's an easy drive from the northern resort area, around 10–15 minutes, with parking near the beach.

The main hazard is the reef at the lagoon edge and the pass that cuts through it: in a side-onshore trade you can get pushed toward the open water if you drift, where the coral bottom turns shallow and sharp and where boats move through. Stay well inside the lagoon, keep a margin off the reef, wear reef shoes, and never edge alone toward the pass or the barrier in strong wind.
