Discover Bonaire — Lac Bay

A warm, flat turquoise lagoon set on a Dutch-Caribbean island, fanned by the trade wind almost year-round. You ride shallow, glassy water far from the crowds, framed by mangroves and salt pans.

Bonaire is a tiny, dry, laid-back island in the Dutch Caribbean, better known to divers than to kiters. You come for a shallow turquoise lagoon ringed by mangroves, with flamingos and salt pans right next door. The trade wind is warm and steady, the water clear, and the crowds almost nonexistent: you set up your session without anyone in your way. The vibe is slow, nature-rich, a world away from mass tourism. You're not here for the party or for big waves, but to ride flat water in peace, take your time, and soak up the island's quiet. A spot where the sea, the wind and the light are all the scenery you need.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

A beginner and freestyle paradise. The water is flat and shallow near shore (you can often stand), warm year-round, and the easterly trade blows steady and side-onshore: ideal for first lessons and for nailing your early tricks. The offshore reef breaks the swell and keeps the water glassy.

Best time

The east-to-northeast trade is most reliable from December to August, strongest from May to August (15-25 knots). Wind usually builds in the early afternoon. The water stays warm (~27 °C) year-round.

Getting there

Heads up: kiting is NOT at Lac Bay (windsurf-only). The official kite zone is Atlantis Beach ("Kite Beach") on the southwest coast, just south of Bonaire airport (BON) — about 10-15 min by car. Parking on site; a rental car is essential, there's no public transport.

Shops, food & showers

At Atlantis Beach you'll find kite schools (Kiteboarding Bonaire, IKO-certified, 16+ years on the island), gear rental and a beach bar with WiFi, showers and a chill-out area to rest between sessions. Bonaire is a quiet diving island: the kite scene is small and mellow, never crowded.

Safety

The whole area is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park: the STINAPA nature fee is mandatory and the zoning is strict. Kiting is allowed ONLY in the dedicated Atlantis Beach zone — Lac Bay is windsurf-only, don't drift into it. Respect the mangroves, seagrass and coral, and keep your distance from the windsurfers. Near shore, mind the shallow bottom: coral, sharp shells and sea urchins — booties recommended.
