The spot

Discover Australie — Lancelin (Australie-Occidentale)

Perth's flagship kite spot, an hour and a half north of the city. Lancelin is two grounds in one: a turquoise lagoon sheltered by its island, flat and welcoming, and waves on the reef on the exposed side. All swept by the 'Lancelin Doctor', the most reliable summer thermal breeze there is, against a backdrop of giant white sand dunes.

There's something ordered, almost ritual, about Lancelin. In summer you watch the sea turn deep blue in the early afternoon, you know the Doctor is coming, and the bay fills with sails. It's the playground of Perth folk: close enough for a Saturday, beautiful enough for a holiday. The contrast is its whole charm — on one side the island lagoon, smooth and kind, where you learn with confidence; on the other the white dunes tumbling to turquoise water, and the reef where swell rises for those who want more. An Australian classic, generous and sure of its wind.

Who & when

Level and best time

Who it's for

For everyone, as long as you pick your corner: the flat lagoon sheltered behind the island is perfect for learning and stacking low-to-the-water moves, while the exposed reef offers waves for confident riders. A very popular weekend spot for Perth riders; you'll find schools and rentals. The strong wind still means sizing your kite carefully.

Best time

The austral summer, November to March: the 'Lancelin Doctor', a south-west sea breeze, fills in most afternoons, 20-30 knots. It's a side-onshore that brings you back to shore — your safe working wind. Conversely, the whole east sector is offshore (wind off the land, often in the morning) and sets you out to sea: you don't head out in an easterly. Lancelin hosts the Lancelin Ocean Classic, the oldest board and kite race in the world.

Arrival guide

Access & water

Lancelin is about an hour and a half north of Perth by road. The water reads in two zones: behind Lancelin Island, a flat, turquoise sheltered lagoon, ideal for learning and freestyle; beyond it, the reef and open ocean for waves. The town is known for its huge white sand dunes (sandboarding) just behind the beach.

Safety

The wind: offshore east & a muscular Doctor

Here the main danger is the wind itself, in two cases. First the whole east sector: it's a wind off the land, offshore, setting you out to sea — common in the morning, you don't head out with it. Then the strength: the Doctor builds fast in the afternoon and can overpower you (20-30 knots); pick your size for the gusts, not the average. Stay in the sheltered lagoon while you're unsure of yourself. Sharks aren't a major issue here, but the west coast is still the west coast: keep an eye out.
